Fuel Costs Spike in Abuja as Pump Prices Climb Above ₦1,370

Petrol prices in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, have surged dramatically, with motorists now paying over ₦1,370 per litre at several filling stations, intensifying public frustration over rising living costs.
Market checks show major outlets adjusting their rates upward within days. NIPCO and AYM Shafa are among stations selling at the highest range, while NNPC Retail and MRS Oil Nigeria have also implemented fresh increases compared to last week’s prices.
The steady rise follows recent price adjustments linked to supply from the Dangote Refinery, contributing to an estimated jump of over 50 percent in fuel costs within a few weeks.
Residents say the impact has been immediate and severe. Many commuters and small business operators report spending significantly more on transportation and daily operations, with some warning that basic mobility is becoming unaffordable.
A civil servant who spoke at a fuel station criticised the pace of the increase, arguing that deregulation should not lead to unchecked price hikes without protective measures for citizens. Others echoed similar concerns, calling on authorities to step in before the situation worsens.
Commercial drivers also described the ripple effects, noting that transport fares have nearly doubled in response to fuel costs, placing additional strain on passengers already grappling with inflation.
With petrol prices continuing to fluctuate, consumers are urging the government to introduce safeguards that can cushion the economic pressure, especially for low- and middle-income earners.
