President Bola Tinubu has ordered a significant reduction in the size of Nigeria’s official delegation for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
The Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, announced this directive on Saturday during a one-day retreat organized for heads of government agencies under the State House’s supervision in Abuja.
Gbajabiamila, in a statement released by Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, explained that this move to streamline the delegation aligns with the administration’s commitment to prudent resource management and cutting governance costs. He emphasized that adherence to statutory guidance, regulations, and presidential directives is crucial.
“In a discussion with the President, we agreed to test this policy during the upcoming UNGA in New York,” Gbajabiamila stated. “There has been much talk about reducing governance costs, and many are observing whether Nigeria will continue the practice of sending the ‘largest delegation’ to the UNGA.”
Gbajabiamila also criticized the misuse of international events for personal agendas and stressed the President’s directive: “If you have no official business at the UN General Assembly, do not go to America. This is a direct order from Mr. President.” He urged heads of agencies to comply strictly with this directive, reassuring them of the President’s dedication to addressing Nigerians’ concerns with seriousness.
Regarding the retreat, Gbajabiamila highlighted its importance for fostering collaboration and coordination among government agencies under the State House. “The goal is to ensure coherence as we work towards the objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he noted. “Coordination is essential for government success and meeting the expectations of the Nigerian people.”
Gbajabiamila emphasized that the retreat would be a continuous exercise, recognizing the dynamic nature of governance and the need for ongoing adjustments. He called on State House management and agency heads to lead by example in complying with statutes, laws, regulations, and policies designed to enhance governance.
“We must excel in our compliance with the Public Procurement Act, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, the Finance Act, and various Appropriation Acts,” Gbajabiamila said.
“Adherence to civil service rules and guidelines, especially in recruitment, promotion, and presidential approvals, is non-negotiable.” The retreat, themed ‘Strengthening Institutional Mechanism for Effective Delivery,’ aimed to improve government efficiency and effectiveness.
