President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, one of the largest estates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The institution will be named Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic, Gwarinpa, in honor of the President.
In a letter dated January 16, 2025, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, conveyed the federal government’s approval to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The polytechnic aims to advance technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial training, aligning with Nigeria’s national education policy.
Dr. Alausa, who personally signed the letter, requested Minister Wike to propose temporary and permanent sites for the institution within Gwarinpa. He further stated that a technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would inspect the proposed locations to finalize the setup.
Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), praised the decision, calling it a “dream come true” for FCT residents. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and commended Minister Wike for their roles in bringing the project to fruition.
Maikalangu also highlighted the historic appointment of Zaphaniah Bitrus Jisalo, the first FCT native to serve as a federal minister, as a source of pride for the community. Jisalo, a former two-term representative for the AMAC/Bwari Constituency in the House of Representatives, was described as a testament to the region’s growing recognition at the national level.
The establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic is expected to drive technological advancement and create entrepreneurial opportunities for residents, marking a significant milestone for the FCT community.
