OPay has threatened legal action against an X user, Hafserh, over a post advising customers to withdraw their funds from the fintech platform amid a false claim that it would suspend operations.
The company issued the legal notice, signed by its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, through its official X account on Monday.
OPay said Hafserh published the post on August 30, urging customers to clear their accounts after a viral notice claimed the company would suspend transactions and account-related services.
The fintech accused the user of acting “falsely, maliciously, and with the aim of bringing our company to disrepute” by presenting the shutdown claim as genuine and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
“Your publication of the false information constitutes on the infringement to our company’s right and have caused reputational and commercial damage to our brand, and harm to our business operations,” OPay said.
The company demanded the permanent removal of the post and warned Hafserh against further publishing or circulating the claim on X or any other platform.
It also demanded an unequivocal retraction and an unreserved apology by 11:59pm WAT on Monday, warning that failure to comply would prompt it to pursue all available legal remedies.
The controversy stemmed from a notice circulated widely on social media on August 30, claiming that OPay would suspend transactions and account-related services from September 1, 2026. The notice urged customers to withdraw their funds to avoid possible inconvenience.
OPay subsequently debunked the claim as false and assured customers that its operations would continue normally.
Following the legal threat, Hafserh issued an “unreserved apology” to OPay on her X account on Monday.
She acknowledged that the claim that OPay would begin an indefinite break from September 1 was false and misleading.
“I have come to the notice that it was false and misleading information,” she said.
“I have taken down my post, @OPay_NG operations are normal, and there is no break or shutdown, I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and reposting misleading information, Thank you for your understanding.”
Hafserh added that the claim had already been circulating on social media for several days before she reposted it on her account.
