Political Unrest in Osun Forces Postponement of National Arts and Culture Meeting

The National Council for Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy meeting, originally set for February 25–27, 2025, in Osun State, has been postponed due to escalating political tensions in the state.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the postponement through an internal memo, attributing the decision to the ongoing unrest linked to disputes over local government leadership.

“With reference to the above, I wish to bring to your notice the current tense situation in Osun State stemmed from political unrest and uproar in view of the ongoing local government elections,” the memo stated.

The Ministry assured stakeholders that a new date would be announced soon and urged all concerned parties to take note of the development and help disseminate the update.

The postponement follows the February 22 local government elections, in which the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all 30 chairmanship seats and 332 councillorship positions. However, local government officials elected in 2022 under former Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration are challenging the results, citing a February 10 Appeal Court ruling in their favor.

In response to the dispute, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who inaugurated the newly elected officials, has directed them to stay away from council secretariats until the legal battle is resolved. He urged them to focus on governance while warning against any attempt to forcibly take control of local government offices.
