Nigerian Petroleum and Electricity Workers to Join Nationwide Strike on June 3

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has instructed its members to participate in an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, as directed by labor unions.
Afolabi Olawale, NUPENG’s general secretary, confirmed this commitment on Saturday, emphasizing the union’s dedication to full compliance.
This action follows the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) declaration on May 31, calling for a strike from June 3 due to the federal government’s refusal to raise the minimum wage from N60,000.
Olawale criticized the government’s “insensitive attitude” towards negotiating a new minimum wage, highlighting the detrimental socio-economic policies affecting workers.
Similarly, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) announced its members’ mobilization for the strike.
Acting general secretary Dominic Igwebike stated on Saturday that the strike is essential due to unresolved issues regarding the minimum wage, electricity tariff hikes, and consumer categorization. He urged all executives to ensure full member participation to prompt appropriate government action.
