The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has cautioned the Federal Government not to undermine the patience of Nigerians following the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol.
In a statement on Thursday, AYCF President General Yerima Shettima expressed deep concern over the government’s approach to the fuel price increase, criticizing the administration for appearing disconnected from the hardships facing the public. Shettima noted that despite earlier calls for patience and promises to improve living conditions, the government’s actions have exacerbated the suffering of citizens.
“The situation has become unbearable,” Shettima said, stressing that the prices of essential goods, particularly food, have become unaffordable for many Nigerians. He also pointed out that the recent increase in the minimum wage to ₦70,000 is insufficient, as the skyrocketing cost of living—especially transportation—has left many workers struggling to make ends meet.
Shettima urged President Bola Tinubu to reassess his economic policies, prioritizing the welfare of the populace. He warned that the ongoing hardship could provoke widespread unrest, stating, “Hungry and angry citizens are being pushed to the wall.” He called for swift action to mitigate the effects of the fuel price hike and improve the overall cost of living.
He also highlighted the broader impact of rising fuel prices on transportation and other sectors, calling on the government to ensure that its renewed hope agenda leads to real, positive changes in people’s lives.
