Brazil Confirms Nigeria’s Acceptance as a Partner in BRICS Bloc

Brazil’s government officially announced on Friday that Nigeria has been accepted as a partner country within the BRICS bloc, a coalition of emerging economies.

In a statement, Brazil, which holds the bloc’s presidency for 2025, highlighted Nigeria’s significant role in strengthening cooperation across the Global South and contributing to the reform of global governance—both key priorities for Brazil.

“As the 6th largest population globally and the largest on the African continent, coupled with its position as one of Africa’s largest economies, Nigeria shares common interests with other BRICS members,” stated Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, also known as Itamaraty.

Nigeria’s inclusion places it alongside eight other nations with similar partner status across regions like Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

It was during the sixteenth annual BRICS summit, held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024, that Nigeria was officially recognized as a BRICS partner country. This development further solidifies the nation’s growing influence in global economic cooperation.
