The trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is facing possible delays due to uncertainty surrounding a crucial prosecution witness.
Sources indicate that the prosecution may inform the Federal Capital Territory High Court that Jim Obazee, a special investigator appointed by President Bola Tinubu, is not available to testify in the case involving an alleged $6.23 million discrepancy tied to the CBN’s Abuja branch.
If confirmed, the development could lead to another adjournment. However, the presiding judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, has previously raised concerns about repeated delays, noting that several adjournments have already exceeded standard timelines.
At the last hearing on March 17, the court directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to present its main witness at the next session, warning of possible consequences if it fails to do so.
A judicial source revealed that prosecutors had earlier considered presenting a police officer as a witness but later dropped the idea, likely due to concerns about the strength of such testimony in a high-profile case.
Despite the uncertainty, EFCC officials are said to have been in contact with Obazee, who is reportedly willing to testify if formally invited through the proper legal process.
