Nigeria was thrown into surprise on Thursday as Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable ten-year spell with the national team.
The veteran defender confirmed his decision in an emotional message on Instagram, reflecting on his journey in the green-white-green.
“Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he wrote. Although stepping away from international duty, he assured fans that his loyalty remains unshaken: “The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”
His announcement followed a report by renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano, who earlier disclosed that the Super Eagles captain had decided to retire, affirming growing speculation about his future.
Troost-Ekong exits with 83 caps and appearances in five major tournaments, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most influential modern defenders. In a longer message on X, he described his retirement as a decision made “with peace and gratitude.”
He traced his national team journey back to 2015, when a life-changing call from the late Stephen Keshi set him on the path that eventually led to the captaincy. He expressed pride in his evolution from a Dutch-raised teenager to the “Oyinbo Wall,” and ultimately, to leading a nation of over 230 million people.
Troost-Ekong highlighted defining moments in his international career, including winning bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics, featuring at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and competing in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He claimed bronze in 2019 and silver in 2023.
One of his proudest personal milestones remains the 2023 AFCON, where he scored in the final and was voted Player of the Tournament though he admitted the final outcome is a memory he wishes had ended differently.
With his retirement, Nigeria bids farewell to a leader whose dedication, consistency, and influence shaped an era of Super Eagles football.
