Trump Administration Directs Federal Agencies to Terminate All DEI Positions and Offices

The Trump administration has mandated the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles within federal agencies, directing their termination within 60 days, according to a memo issued Friday by the Office of Personnel Management. This directive aligns with a series of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump since taking office earlier this week, aimed at dismantling DEI initiatives across the federal government.

DEI programs are designed to increase opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Advocates argue these initiatives address systemic inequities and promote fairness in institutions. However, the Trump administration views such programs as discriminatory against other Americans and as undermining merit-based systems in hiring and promotions.

“In accordance with that order, each agency, department, or commission head shall take action to terminate, to the maximum extent allowed by law, all DEI, DEIA, and ‘environmental justice’ offices and positions within sixty days,” the memo states.

The directive extends beyond government agencies, with Trump encouraging private companies to curtail DEI efforts as well. Civil rights groups have criticized this push, warning it threatens decades of progress in reducing disparities and ensuring equity in federal employment and contracting practices.

The exact number of federal positions affected by the order remains unclear, as the memo does not provide details on the current scope of DEI staffing across agencies. Critics have called the move a significant setback, arguing it could deepen existing inequities and reverse gains made toward a more inclusive workforce.

Supporters of the directive view it as a necessary step to eliminate what they perceive as “reverse discrimination” in government and corporate practices. However, opponents caution that dismantling these programs risks perpetuating systemic inequalities and eroding public trust in the government’s commitment to diversity and fairness.

As federal agencies begin implementing the changes, the impact of this policy shift on both public institutions and broader societal equity efforts will likely remain a contentious issue.
