Nigeria Ends African Athletics Championships Strong With Relay Gold

Nigeria wrapped up the 2026 African Athletics Championships in style after the women’s 4x400m relay team won gold on the final day, helping the country finish fourth overall with 12 medals.
The quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George dominated the race, clocking 3:29.25 to successfully defend their title ahead of Ethiopia and Kenya.
The victory secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the championships.
Nigeria ended the competition with four gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, finishing behind Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia on the medal table.
Rosemary Chukwuma also added a silver medal in the women’s 200m after finishing behind Ivory Coast’s Maboundou Kone. Chukwuma finished the championships with three medals overall.
Nigeria’s campaign was led by world record holder Tobi Amusan, who won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Other medalists included Oyesade Olatoye, Divine Oladipo, Adaobi Tabugbo and Chidera Ezeakor, capping off a strong outing for Team Nigeria.
