Trump Administration Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America and Restores Denali’s Name to Mount McKinley

The Trump administration has enacted two significant name changes to iconic US landmarks, sparking both praise and controversy. On Friday, the Interior Department announced that the Gulf of Mexico will now be referred to as the Gulf of America, while Alaska’s Denali will revert to its former name, Mount McKinley.

The decisions were made through a series of executive orders signed by President Donald Trump earlier this week, fulfilling a prominent campaign pledge. “These name changes reflect our commitment to honoring American heritage and history,” the Interior Department said in a statement.

Mount McKinley, originally named after President William McKinley, had been renamed Denali in 1975 to honor its significance in the Koyukon Indigenous language, where “Denali” means “the tall one.” Trump’s decision to restore the name Mount McKinley, the nation’s tallest peak, was framed as a tribute to McKinley’s role during a transformative period in US history. In his inaugural address, Trump praised McKinley as a leader who “expanded American prosperity and influence.”

The renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has generated considerable debate, especially on the international stage. While the US Geological Survey and federal agencies have been directed to adopt the new name, other nations, including Mexico, have voiced strong opposition. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum humorously suggested renaming North America as “Mexican America” in response, emphasizing the historical ties and international recognition of the Gulf’s current name.

Critics argue that the changes prioritize nationalism over inclusivity and could strain diplomatic relations. Supporters, however, see them as an assertion of American identity and historical pride.

The move has ignited discussions about the balance between preserving cultural heritage and asserting national influence, with lasting implications for both domestic and international perspectives. Whether these name changes will gain wider acceptance or face further challenges remains uncertain.
