The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies could cost him re-election in 2027 if not urgently reviewed.
Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, aired on Channels Television, Gabam criticized the removal of petrol subsidies, forex unification, electricity tariff hikes, and telecom tariff increases, saying they have worsened economic hardship for Nigerians.
“He (Tinubu) needs to review some of his policies, he needs to rejig his cabinet if he wants to leave a legacy… I don’t see him surviving another election with the same kind of policies going on,” Gabam said.
Comparing the situation to the 2012 protests against former President Goodluck Jonathan, Gabam noted that public demonstrations against Tinubu’s administration have started in less than two years a situation that historically signals political trouble.
He also accused the government of suppressing opposition voices, claiming that political leaders who offer advice are treated as enemies.
“Nobody can talk to a governor, he will abuse you… The same thing applies to the current government. The moment you advise them, they see you as an enemy.”
Reacting to claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the APC is bribing opposition parties with N50 million to weaken them, Gabam denied any financial dealings with the ruling party.
“For me as SDP, I cannot speak for other political parties. There is no single transaction between SDP and the Federal Government or any of its agents.”
Gabam suggested that if the APC wants to eliminate opposition voices, they should amend the constitution to establish a one-party state, rather than resorting to coercion.
