The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a March 1, 2025, deadline for telecommunications companies to revert to their old tariff rates or face a nationwide shutdown of their operations.
In a communique signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the union condemned the tariff increase, describing it as arbitrary and exploitative.
To resist the hike, the NLC announced a boycott of MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO services daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February. It also urged Nigerians to stop purchasing data from these companies.
“If the telecommunications companies fail to revert to the old tariff by the end of February 2025, a total shutdown of their operations nationwide will commence from March 1, 2025,” the statement warned.
The NLC further directed its State Councils and affiliate unions to begin sensitization and mobilization efforts, calling on civil society groups and the public to join in the protest.
Regarding the Tax Reform Bills, the NLC stated that while it supports fiscal reforms, new tax policies must ease the burden on Nigerian workers rather than worsen the existing economic hardship. It pledged to engage with relevant authorities to ensure fair and worker-friendly tax policies.
