Netanyahu and Biden Discuss Gaza Ceasefire, Hostage Release Efforts

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Joe Biden engaged in discussions on Sunday, focusing on ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of hostages, according to official statements.

Netanyahu updated Biden on developments in the negotiations and the directives given to Israeli representatives in Doha, emphasizing the importance of securing the hostages’ freedom. He expressed gratitude to Biden for his support, calling the mission a “holy effort.”

The White House confirmed the conversation included Biden’s reiteration of his call for an immediate ceasefire, the safe return of hostages, and expanded humanitarian aid to Gaza. Biden also referenced shifting regional dynamics, such as the 2024 ceasefire in Lebanon, the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Iran’s waning influence.

This conversation marked the first public communication between Netanyahu and Biden since October 2024 and took place amid internal tensions within Netanyahu’s coalition. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir have vocally opposed Biden’s proposed ceasefire framework, which ties a truce to the release of hostages.

The two far-right ministers warned of resignations and potential political fallout should the government accept Biden’s terms, arguing for continued military operations against Hamas until its full defeat and the liberation of all captives.

Meanwhile, Israeli negotiators, including Mossad chief David Barnea, reported “cautious optimism” about progress in high-level discussions in Doha over the weekend. The talks remain a critical focal point for international diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis.
