The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take immediate action to prevent violence against South West Muslims, particularly those in the Yoruba community, in light of escalating threats linked to the Sharia law debate.
In a statement issued on Saturday by MURIC’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, the group also urged the Department of State Security (DSS) and other security agencies to intervene and curb the increasing threats. Akintola warned that the situation was rapidly intensifying and was shifting towards violence, both online and offline, against Yoruba Muslims.
“We are compelled to call the attention of the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and other security agencies to halt the ongoing plot to incite violence against South West Muslims,” Akintola stated, adding that new threats were being issued daily by various Yoruba groups.
MURIC’s leadership specifically pointed out that many of these threats were originating from Ahmed Saliu Olokoju, who has identified himself as the Secretary General of the Yoruba Islamic Salvation Front (YOISF).
