The Federal Government has expressed disappointment over remarks made by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, in which he criticized his decision to withhold support for the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at the 21st memorial lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi in Lagos, Sanusi, the former Central Bank Governor, acknowledged the necessity of the reforms but refrained from offering his support due to personal grievances with the government.
In a statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris expressed regret at the Emir’s stance, pointing out that Sanusi’s criticisms now undermine reforms that are widely recognized as essential by global experts, including by the Emir himself.
The government reiterated the importance of reforms such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies, which are crucial for Nigeria’s economic recovery. While acknowledging the short-term challenges, the government highlighted the positive outcomes already beginning to show.
Idris urged Emir Sanusi to prioritize national interest over personal grievances and contribute to strengthening the country’s economy. He also called for unity among leaders to ensure a prosperous future, stressing the importance of actions that build public trust rather than undermine it.
