Yobe State Revokes Licenses For All Private Schools

The Yobe State government has invalidated the licenses of all private schools in the state, instructing operators interested in compliance with established rules and regulations to reapply for new licenses.
Furthermore, the state government declared that moving forward, the activities of all private schools in the state would align with those of public schools. Proprietors will no longer be permitted to operate and establish rules that deviate from the norms and values of the state.
Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss, the State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, revealed this during a meeting with private school proprietors at Government Girls Unity College Damaturu on Thursday. He emphasized that no private school would be allowed to operate without a license, signaling the end of taking shortcuts in the registration process.
Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss addressed the proprietors, stating that the Yobe State government has taken measures to exert absolute control over the education system. He expressed dissatisfaction with the policies of some private schools that, in his view, violate the norms and values of the state.
He clarified that private schools should henceforth operate in harmony with public schools across the state. Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss stated, “We have cancelled the licences so that we would renew them. If you must operate a private school in Yobe State, you must play the game by its rules.”
He outlined the process, saying, “We are saying that you should re-apply, and within a period of 30 days, you will have your licences. You can operate for a period of one month, come to us, purchase the form, we will assess your school, and if you are qualified within a period of 30 days, you have your licence to operate.”
While clarifying that no private schools have been closed, the commissioner emphasized that the licenses have been revoked. He urged parents to take note of the development, indicating that communication with WAEC (West African Examinations Council) would be initiated.
Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss mentioned that the Yobe State government has approved dual curricula in all public schools, a policy that will also be implemented in private schools. Interested children will have the option to memorize the Qur’an and learn Arabic Language. If a student or pupil is not interested, they will learn French instead, aiming for graduation with proficiency in at least two languages apart from their mother tongue.
Chairman of the House Committee on Education and member representing Damagum Constituency, Alhaji Maina Digma Gana, assured that the state legislature would support initiatives focused on imparting standard knowledge to the upcoming generation.
Proprietors who spoke to newsmen after the meeting found it timely, advising the government to ensure flexibility and efficiency in the upcoming licensing process, free from bureaucracy.
