Authorities are investigating after a deceased individual was discovered in the wheel well of a United Airlines flight that landed at Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii, on Christmas Eve.

The Maui Police Department issued a statement confirming the active investigation, saying, “A deceased individual was discovered on an incoming flight from the mainland this afternoon.”

United Airlines Flight 202 had traveled from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Kahului on December 24. The airline confirmed to ABC News that the body was found in the wheel well of one of the aircraft’s main landing gears.

United Airlines stated that the wheel well is only accessible from outside the aircraft, and it remains unclear how or when the unidentified individual gained access. The airline is cooperating fully with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-10, according to United Airlines. Further details about the individual and circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been disclosed.
