Kazakhstan Plane Crash Leaves Dozens Dead, Multiple Survivors Reported

A passenger plane carrying around 70 people crashed in Kazakhstan early Wednesday, killing dozens and leaving at least 30 survivors, according to local officials.

The flight, Azerbaijan Airlines J2-8243, was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, when it caught fire while attempting an emergency landing near the Kazakh city of Aktau. The airline cited poor visibility caused by fog as the reason for the diversion.

Flight data shows the Embraer 190 aircraft departed Baku at 03:55 GMT and crashed around 06:28 GMT. Video footage captured the plane descending rapidly with its landing gear deployed before bursting into flames upon impact, approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) from Aktau Airport.

The airline stated there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board, but conflicting reports suggest a total of 72 individuals. Authorities have reported varying numbers of survivors, ranging from 28 to 32.

Most passengers were Azerbaijani nationals, with others from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan also on board.

Initial reports from Russian media suggested the aircraft may have collided with a flock of birds before the crash, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Unverified footage showed survivors crawling from the wreckage, some with visible injuries. Rescue operations were swift, with local authorities working to assist survivors and recover the remains of those who perished.

Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have launched investigations into the cause of the crash. Embraer, the Brazilian manufacturer of the aircraft, said it is “ready to assist all relevant authorities.” The company has a strong safety record and is a smaller competitor to Boeing and Airbus.

Azerbaijan Airlines and other involved authorities have yet to provide further updates. The tragic incident has left many mourning, with families awaiting clarity on the full scope of the disaster.
