As the global community marks World Teachers’ Day, education stakeholders have called for greater support for teachers, recognizing their critical role as co-creators of destinies alongside parents and a higher power. They highlighted the need for teachers to receive the necessary support to thrive and find fulfillment in their profession.
Under this year’s theme, “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” stakeholders underscored the importance of professional development, urging teachers to aim for standards similar to those in respected fields such as medicine, engineering, and law.
Chief Alaka Yusuf, President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (Lagos State), called on governments, school owners, and other stakeholders to contribute through retraining, recognition, and improved remuneration for teachers, acknowledging their essential role in child and national development.
Educationist and author Michael Omisore reinforced these views, encouraging teachers to uphold professionalism and commit to positively impacting their students’ lives with renewed enthusiasm. He noted that despite economic challenges affecting various sectors, education offers vast opportunities for growth and success. Omisore advised teachers to concentrate on delivering value and exploring new paths to excel in their profession.
