Aisha Yesufu: Wike Won’t Influence My 2027 Senate Bid

FCT senatorial aspirant, Aisha Yesufu, has dismissed claims that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, would play any decisive role in her political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, Yesufu said her focus remains on securing the mandate of voters under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing that her campaign is centred on the people rather than political appointees.

She said she was not concerned about “those who say they will take over Abuja,” insisting that her goal is to provide a credible alternative for residents of the FCT.

According to her, she is “not in the business of appointments” but in the business of earning the people’s mandate, adding that Wike, as an appointee, is not a factor in her political calculations.

Yesufu also renewed her call for constitutional reforms to increase FCT representation in the National Assembly. She argued that Abuja, given its population and size, should have three senators and at least six members in the House of Representatives.

She said this expansion would strengthen representation and ensure residents’ voices are better reflected at the national level.

“The FCT has gone beyond the stage where we struggle for one senator,” she said, adding that she intends to push the proposal if elected.

The activist further urged supporters to actively participate in party primaries, warning that popularity alone would not secure victory without voter turnout.

She is expected to compete for the FCT senatorial ticket alongside other major contenders in what is shaping up to be a competitive race ahead of 2027.
