United States Defeats Bosnia-Herzegovina to Reach World Cup Round of 16

The United States men’s national soccer team advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team on Wednesday night, securing the nation’s first World Cup knockout-stage victory in 24 years.

The United States will now face Belgium national football team on July 6 for a place in the quarterfinals.

Forward Folarin Balogun gave the Americans the lead before being shown a controversial red card in the 64th minute following an on-field clash with a Bosnian player.

The dismissal means Balogun will be suspended for the United States’ next match against Belgium.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Americans extended their advantage in the closing stages when Malik Tillman converted a free kick in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.

The match was played at Levi’s Stadium, where the U.S. continued its impressive World Cup campaign.

The victory followed a strong performance during the group stage, where the Americans finished atop their group with a 2-1 record.

The U.S. opened the tournament with victories over Paraguay national football team and Australia national soccer team before suffering a loss to Turkey national football team after already securing qualification for the knockout rounds.

With momentum on its side, the U.S. now turns its attention to Belgium, aiming to continue its deepest World Cup run in more than two decades despite the absence of Balogun.
