President Bola Tinubu has rejected suggestions to downsize his administration’s cabinet, which, at approximately 50 ministers, is Nigeria’s largest to date. Speaking during a media chat on Monday, the president defended the extensive structure, asserting that each minister was appointed with a specific purpose to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
“I’m not prepared to bring down the size of my cabinet,” Tinubu stated. “You don’t give somebody an assignment that they cannot fulfill. Job descriptions must be efficient and effective. Nigeria is a large country.”
Critics have questioned the rationale behind the unprecedented cabinet size, describing it as insensitive amid the administration’s current performance. However, Tinubu argued that the size reflects the complexity of governing a nation as diverse as Nigeria.
Challenged on the performance of his ministers, the president responded, “Show me one [minister not performing], and I will argue with you,” emphasizing that all appointees are actively contributing to his administration’s goals.
Tinubu’s unwavering stance highlights his administration’s belief in the strategic necessity of a broad cabinet to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges.
