South-West Governors Establish Joint Security Team, Address Economic Challenges

Governors of the South-West region have agreed to set up a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team to combat rising insecurity across the region.

The resolution was part of discussions at the South-West Governors’ Forum meeting held in Lagos on Thursday.

“Recognizing emerging security threats, we resolved to establish a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team to enhance security coordination across the South-West,” Lagos State Governor and Forum Chairman Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on his X handle.

Beyond security, the governors tackled economic concerns linked to government policies, including fuel subsidy removal and currency floatation, which have contributed to inflation.

Despite these challenges, they expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, citing improvements in fuel supply and exchange rate stabilization.

To address rising food prices, they agreed to establish:

  • A State Food Inflation Joint Monitoring Team
  • Aggregation Centres and Food Hubs to regulate food supply and curb inflation.

The governors also praised the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a transformative initiative and encouraged students in the region to take advantage of it.

Additionally, they welcomed the establishment of the South-West Development Commission (SWDC), with its headquarters at Cocoa House, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed support for Odu’a Investment Company Limited to manage regional assets and tasked the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission with strengthening collaborations in agriculture, industrialization, and infrastructure development.
