The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment, citing several alleged impeachable offenses.
At its 133rd Legislative Sitting yesterday, the Rivers State House of Assembly also issued a warrant of arrest for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd.), and his commissioners, for failing to honor a legislative summons regarding the October 5, 2024, local council elections.
The ongoing political crisis has led to the resignation of three RSIEC commissioners within 48 hours, including Ibierembo Thompson, who cited the recent Supreme Court judgment annulling the local council elections as the reason for stepping down.
APC Rivers Chairman, Tony Okocha, criticized Fubara’s invitation to the Assembly, calling it “absurd” and insisting the governor should present the budget and commissioner nominees to lawmakers in person. He accused Fubara of ignoring reconciliation efforts, including President Bola Tinubu’s peace meeting.
Meanwhile, former Governor Rufus Ada-George has urged political actors to avoid inflammatory statements and work toward stability.
Despite the tension, Fubara reassured his supporters, stating that Rivers people would emerge stronger. He called for peace and lawfulness, warning against political disruptions.
