PDP Withdraws from Ondo Council Polls, Citing Lack of Trust in ODIEC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its decision to boycott Saturday’s council election in Ondo State, citing a lack of confidence in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).

Bakita Bello, the acting chairman of the PDP in Ondo State, disclosed the decision on Thursday, stating that the party had formally notified ODIEC of its withdrawal. Speaking to journalists in Akure, Bello expressed doubts about ODIEC’s ability to conduct a transparent election. “It’s our decision to announce that we (PDP) have decided not to participate in the local government election. We have also informed ODIEC in writing about this development,” he said.

Leye Igbabo, the PDP spokesperson, echoed these sentiments in a statement, accusing the electoral body of failing an “integrity test.” Igbabo revealed that the decision followed consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and the national secretariat.

The statement further noted that the PDP had initially fielded candidates across the state, including 15 for chairmanship positions and 131 for councillorship seats. However, concerns about ODIEC’s impartiality led to the party’s withdrawal.

“Recent observations and reports point to a troubling pattern of double standards by ODIEC, raising serious doubts about their ability to conduct a free, fair, and credible election,” Igbabo stated. He emphasized that the PDP, as a party committed to democratic values, could not endorse a compromised process.

Reacting to the announcement, ODIEC Chairman Joseph Aremo expressed surprise, highlighting the PDP’s prior active participation in preparatory activities such as workshops and seminars. “We are shocked because the PDP has been part and parcel of the process at the initial stage. In fact, members of the party have been commending us,” Aremo said.

In a related development, the Ondo State police command has imposed restrictions on vehicular movements during the election. From 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, only security personnel, medics, and essential service providers will be permitted to move freely.

Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya urged commuters to plan accordingly and warned potential troublemakers to stay away, citing measures in place to maintain peace and order. Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi assured residents of adequate security to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
