Over 40% of Nigerian Army Personnel Lack Accommodation, Says COAS

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Olufemi Oluyede, has revealed that more than 40 percent of Nigerian Army personnel are without proper accommodation. He made this disclosure during the inauguration of the newly constructed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Abuja’s Asokoro district, with President Bola Tinubu in attendance.

Oluyede noted that addressing the acute housing shortage is a pressing issue for the Nigerian Army. “Your excellency may recall that on assuming office as the Chief of Army Staff, one of the critical issues presented was the fact that about 40 percent of Nigerian Army personnel are not accommodated,” Oluyede said.

The newly inaugurated barracks provide housing for 614 personnel, comprising 170 officers and 444 soldiers. It includes 16 major general quarters, 17 brigadier general quarters, and various family quarters for officers, soldiers, and their families.

Despite this progress, Oluyede acknowledged that the accommodation gap remains significant.

The COAS commended President Tinubu for his support and commitment to ensuring army personnel have access to affordable and decent housing. He said naming the barracks after the president was a “humble way of giving honour to whom honour is due,” in recognition of his extraordinary efforts to improve the welfare and operational needs of the Nigerian Army.
