Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has accused his successor, Governor Hyacinth Alia, of concealing ongoing mass burials in the state to create a false impression of peace under his administration.
Ortom’s reaction followed Alia’s claim during a church service at NKST Church, Ikpayongo, that killings by armed herders had ceased since he took office.
In a statement on Monday, Ortom’s media aide, Terver Akase, countered the claim, insisting that violent attacks and mass burials have continued in conflict-prone areas such as Ukum, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Gwer East, and Agatu.
“This government is only attempting to conceal the truth about the killings and mass burials,” Ortom stated.
Defending his administration, Ortom pointed to his anti-open grazing policies and resistance against herdsmen attacks despite federal pressure. He accused Alia of prioritizing efforts to discredit his predecessor over fulfilling campaign promises.
“Being a state governor is temporary. Tomorrow, he too will become a former governor. Instead of attacking me, Governor Alia should focus on governance,” Ortom said.
