Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has issued an apology to security agencies following the recent assault on operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) within the Lagos State Assembly complex.
Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the House in January, returned to the Assembly premises on Thursday under police escort and declared his reinstatement as Speaker.
Earlier, viral videos captured a confrontation between security operatives and Assembly workers on February 17, 2025, resulting in the arrest, arraignment, and remand of several officials accused of assaulting DSS personnel.
Following investigations, the DSS arrested key Assembly officials allegedly involved in the altercation, including Olalekan Azeez, the Sergeant-at-Arms; Adekunle Ajayi, a legislative officer; and Ganiyu Hassan, an aide to a principal officer. They were arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court on charges of assault, obstruction of lawful duty, and breach of public peace and subsequently remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Center pending further proceedings.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 27, Obasa described the incident as regrettable and extended an unreserved apology on behalf of the Assembly.
“On behalf of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I hereby apologize to the security agencies for the embarrassment caused them, and in particular, the assault on DSS operatives as widely circulated in videos,” the statement read.

Obasa reaffirmed the Assembly’s appreciation for security agencies, acknowledging their crucial role in maintaining order and protecting lives and property. He noted that the presence of DSS operatives on that day was requested, as had been done previously, and regretted how events unfolded.
“It is regrettable that security operatives of the DSS had to be assaulted in the hallowed chambers of our State Assembly. I hereby apologize unreservedly on behalf of the entire Assembly,” he added.
Reassuring that the Assembly and security agencies have always maintained a strong working relationship, Obasa expressed hope that the incident would not strain their collaboration. He also appealed for leniency regarding those charged in connection with the altercation, advocating for a peaceful resolution.
The apology follows Obasa’s resumption as Speaker. Meanwhile, the three Assembly staff members facing assault charges over the incident have been granted bail.
