NCC Approves 50% Tariff Increase for Telecoms Operators

Nigerian telephone subscribers will experience a 50% increase in data and airtime costs following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of higher tariffs for telecom operators.

In a statement, NCC spokesman Reuben Muoka explained that while some operators had requested over a 100% hike, the approved adjustment was determined after considering ongoing industry reforms aimed at ensuring sustainability.

“The adjustment aligns with Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, empowering the NCC to regulate and approve tariff rates,” Muoka stated. He added that the revised tariffs will remain within the bands outlined in the 2013 NCC Cost Study and be reviewed individually based on the NCC’s 2024 Tariff Simplification Guidelines.

Since 2013, telecom tariffs have remained unchanged despite rising operational costs. The NCC explained that the new rates are essential to closing the gap between expenses and revenues, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery, and enabling operators to invest in infrastructure and innovation.

“The adjustments aim to enhance network quality, expand coverage, and improve customer service, ultimately benefiting consumers,” the regulator said.

The NCC acknowledged the financial challenges faced by Nigerians and emphasized its commitment to fairness and transparency in implementing the tariff changes. Operators have been mandated to educate subscribers about the new rates and demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery.

Nigeria, as of December 2023, had over 224 million telecom subscribers. MTN leads the market with 87 million subscribers, accounting for 38.79% of the market share. Globacom and Airtel each have 61 million users, while 9mobile serves 13.9 million subscribers.

The NCC assured the public that the revised tariffs are designed to maintain a balance between affordability and service quality, ensuring a robust telecommunications industry for the country.
