Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has admitted that Nigerian leaders have not done enough for the people and must apologize for failing to meet their expectations.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels TV, Fayemi acknowledged that while incompetence is not always the issue, structural challenges have hindered governance.
“We must apologize to the Nigerian people. We have not succeeded in doing everything we should for them. That is not just because we are incompetent, but because there are structural impediments making things more difficult. Clearly, we have not done enough to improve the lives of Nigerians, and for that, we will not hesitate to apologize,” he said.
Fayemi emphasized the need for collective efforts among leaders to prevent worsening economic and social conditions, stating, “If we don’t, the risks will be higher than what we have today.”
On President Bola Tinubu’s administration, he acknowledged Tinubu’s boldness in implementing tough policies that past leaders avoided, such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange convergence. However, he stressed that good intentions alone are not enough.
“President Tinubu has done many good things, and we must acknowledge that. However, well-meaning leadership is not enough intentionality and strategic execution are critical to success.”
