Kaduna Governor Challenges Critics to Prove Popularity in 2027 Elections

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna has urged politicians who believe they can defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to put their popularity to the test in the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an interview with TVC News on Monday, Sani expressed surprise that some founding members of the ruling party were openly criticizing Tinubu’s administration.

“I can tell you as a member of APC, we have been engaging ourselves; I cannot say we are perfect— but I can say that most of the people that are making the comments (against Tinubu’s administration) are also members of our own party,” he said.

According to Sani, many of these critics were among the party’s founding members, making their recent remarks particularly unexpected. He noted that some had even encouraged public opposition to the government in ways he deemed undemocratic.

“I can say it was really unfortunate because some of them were even calling for people to come out and take laws into their hands, oppose the government in a way that I feel is undemocratic,” he added.

The Kaduna governor emphasized that Nigeria remains in a democratic system, and with two and a half years until the next election, any politician confident in their ability to defeat Tinubu and the APC should focus on mobilization rather than criticism.

“There is still time, but they can go back to the drawing board and mobilise and come out. But what I can say here is that as someone who is a governor, I can say that the current government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu have done extremely well,” he stated.

His comments come in response to recent statements from Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, and Nasir el-Rufai, ex-governor of Kaduna, at a conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

El-Rufai accused the ruling APC of straying from its founding principles and fostering poor leadership. He later reaffirmed his stance on social media, stating that he would continue to criticize the party even if he were part of Tinubu’s government.

Similarly, Amaechi argued that Tinubu and the political elite would not willingly relinquish power to the younger generation without a struggle.

In response to these criticisms, the presidency, along with Bello Matawalle, minister of state for defence, swiftly countered the remarks made by both politicians.
