Indian Lawmakers Demand Debate Over Alleged Mistreatment of Deportees from U.S.

Indian opposition lawmakers have demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, calling for a parliamentary debate on the alleged mistreatment of 104 Indian immigrants deported from the United States.

A U.S. military aircraft carrying the deportees landed in Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday, just one week before Modi’s scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

According to The Times of India and The Indian Express, citing unnamed Punjab officials who spoke with the deportees, all adults were handcuffed throughout the flight. Upon arrival, they were subjected to hours of scrutiny at Amritsar airport before being escorted out in small groups by police vehicles.

While some deportees were later flown to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, others—mainly from Punjab and Haryana—remained under police supervision in the region. A Reuters witness reported seeing security personnel escorting deportees out of Ahmedabad airport.

Congress Party lawmaker Gaurav Gogoi, in a formal notice to the lower house of parliament, condemned the reported treatment of the deportees.

“Reports have surfaced of these individuals being shackled and treated in a degrading manner during their deportation process, raising serious concerns about their human dignity and rights,” Gogoi stated.

Fellow Congress Party lawmaker Manickam Tagore urged Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to clarify India’s position and disclose the government’s response in parliament.

Neither India’s foreign ministry nor the U.S. embassy immediately responded to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, both houses of parliament were adjourned on Thursday as opposition lawmakers shouted slogans, demanding an official statement from the Modi administration.

With Modi’s upcoming visit to Washington, pressure is mounting on his government to address the concerns surrounding the deportation and ensure the dignity and rights of Indian nationals abroad.
