The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has declared that the enforcement of mandatory third-party vehicle insurance laws will begin on February 1, 2025.
The announcement was made during a visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja by the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team.
Citing Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, the IGP emphasized the legal requirement for all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance before operating on public roads.
“This enforcement is crucial for road safety and the protection of all road users,” the IGP said. “Starting February 1, 2025, violations of these laws will attract penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or both.”
Mr. Omosehin, in his remarks, praised the IGP’s efforts in advancing police welfare, notably the establishment of the Police Insurance Company Limited. He also reiterated the importance of third-party insurance, urging police cooperation to ensure compliance nationwide.
Third-party insurance plays a vital role in mitigating financial risks associated with road accidents and protecting road users, reinforcing its significance in road safety regulations.
The police urged Nigerians to adhere to these laws, highlighting the collective responsibility of ensuring safer roads and compliance with the regulations.
