The Federal Government has inaugurated a special committee to improve safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways and curb recurring boat accidents.
Announcing the initiative in Lagos on Thursday, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, described it as a critical move to prevent the frequent loss of lives and property caused by boat mishaps.
“Our waterways are vital to commerce, transportation, and livelihoods, and ensuring their safety is a priority for the development of Nigeria’s blue economy,” Oyetola said.
The initiative aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.”
Chaired by National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, the committee includes representatives from state governments, the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics. Their mandate involves conducting a comprehensive review of commercial boat operations, identifying the root causes of boat mishaps, and recommending sustainable safety measures.
In his acceptance speech, Oyebamiji assured the minister of the committee’s dedication to the task, emphasizing that ensuring safe waterways is non-negotiable.
“This is another solution-driven initiative aimed at eliminating boat mishaps. We pledge to work diligently and with utmost focus,” he stated.
The committee has been given six weeks to complete its assignment and submit recommendations for enhancing safety and operational standards on Nigeria’s waterways.
