Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed speculations that he plans to go into exile over alleged threats of arrest and torture by the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
El-Rufai, who has been at loggerheads with the Presidency and the ruling APC, stated that despite warnings from political associates, he will not flee Nigeria.
In a response to an X user, Imran Wakili, the former governor said he would return from Egypt before February 20, 2025, to attend the launch of former President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs.
El-Rufai alleged that since July 2024, there had been persistent rumors of his arrest and detention linked to the controversial Kaduna Assembly report. He accused the government of attempting to intimidate him into self-imposed exile but insisted he would stay and fight back.
“Silence is no longer golden. Inaction has never been an option. The arrest, detention, and torture of perceived political enemies are nothing new in human affairs. I have been arrested and detained thrice in the past for expressing my views of previous governments,” he said.
El-Rufai added that he had put his academic and language-learning plans on hold to spend more time in Nigeria, warning those behind the alleged plot that he fears only Allah and is prepared for the worst.
