Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s appointment choices, alleging that they are disproportionately tilted toward his close associates from Lagos.
Speaking on Arise TV on Monday, El-Rufai argued that the perceived imbalance should not be attributed to the entire South-West but rather to Tinubu’s personal preferences.
“President Tinubu’s appointments are quite imbalanced. Don’t blame the South-West for what one individual is doing,” he stated.
He clarified that the appointments are not necessarily based on ethnic considerations but on loyalty to Tinubu.
“The President’s appointments are not being made because the appointees are Yoruba, but because they are his own boys, and most of the appointments do not even reasonably cover the South-West,” he added.
El-Rufai cautioned against generalizing Tinubu’s actions as representative of the Yoruba people, just as he warned against holding the North accountable for past military regimes.
“People should stop confusing the truth. The appointments are not balanced. Yes, definitely. You cannot argue that, but it’s not a Yoruba thing. Please don’t punish the Yorubas as you have been punishing Northerners for the sins of the military,” he said.
He urged Tinubu to address the growing concerns, warning that dissatisfaction is rising in the North.
“Let’s focus on individuals and hold them accountable. President Tinubu needs to do something about that. It’s still not too late. He can correct it, but there is palpable anger in the North,” El-Rufai stressed.
