Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a prominent South-South leader and former Federal Commissioner for Information, has passed away at the age of 97.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued by a family representative, Prof. C.C. Clark, on Tuesday. According to the statement, Clark died on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Clark was a formidable voice in Nigerian politics, advocating for regional unity and national development. He played a significant role in mediating peace in the Niger Delta and among political figures. Last October, he set up a reconciliation committee to mend relations between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his political ally-turned-rival, Nyesom Wike.
His passing comes just days after the death of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Afenifere. Both statesmen were vocal about Nigeria’s restructuring and were instrumental in calls for implementing the 2014 National Conference report to address the country’s political and socio-economic challenges.
Clark, born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, pursued his early education in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before obtaining a law degree abroad. He served in key governmental roles, including as an adviser to Mid-Western Region military governor David Ejoor and later as Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon’s administration.
His family has requested prayers as they prepare further announcements regarding funeral arrangements.
May his soul rest in peace.
