Atiku Urges Independent Probe Into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Akpabio

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to initiate an independent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, alleged that her challenges in the Senate began after she rejected Akpabio’s advances during a visit to his home in Uyo for his birthday celebration in December 2023.

Reacting via his X page, Atiku described the allegations as “grave” and stressed the need for a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation to uphold the integrity of the Senate.

“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress,” Atiku stated.

He further emphasized that the Senate President, as the third most powerful figure in the country, should embody unimpeachable character and champion the protection of women, rather than being at the center of allegations that undermine those principles.

With only four women in the Senate, Atiku noted that ensuring a safe and fair environment for female lawmakers is crucial for gender inclusion and governance. He urged the Senate and the presidency to handle the matter seriously, adding that their response would reflect Nigeria’s commitment to justice and accountability.

Meanwhile, Ekaette Akpabio, wife of the Senate President, has dismissed the allegations, describing her husband as a “disciplined and responsible” man who would never disrespect her or their children.

The controversy comes after a heated argument between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan in the Senate over a change in seating arrangements on February 20.
