Kylian Mbappé delivered another standout performance as France advanced to the Round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden national football team on Tuesday, continuing Les Bleus’ impressive run at the FIFA World Cup.
Playing in sweltering conditions at MetLife Stadium, Mbappé scored twice to register his third two-goal performance of the tournament and set a new career record for goals scored in World Cup knockout matches.
The victory sends France into a Round of 16 clash against Paraguay national football team.
“I personally haven’t seen a better team,” Sweden coach Graham Potter said after the match. “The quality they have all over the pitch, and the options they have off the bench, are very, very strong. They’ve got as good a chance as anybody.”
Mbappé opened the scoring just before halftime with a brilliant individual effort in the 45th minute before adding his second goal in the 74th minute.
The brace brought his tournament tally to six goals, drawing him level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings.
In between Mbappé’s goals, Bradley Barcola found the net in the 53rd minute to extend France’s lead.
The result also saw France become the first team to score three or more goals in five consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.
Speaking after the victory, Mbappé praised the team’s collective effort while insisting there is still room for improvement.
“I’m very aware of who I am, how I play and what I should do, but it’s not just about me,” he said through a translator. “The entire team knows what needs to be done. This is a new phase of the competition. We played well, but we were a little timid at the start and could have done better.”
Mbappé’s latest goals raised his career World Cup tally to 18 in just 18 matches, leaving him one goal behind Messi’s record of 19 World Cup goals scored across 29 appearances.
His 10 knockout-stage goals also established a new tournament record, surpassing Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo, who each scored eight.
France coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to his star forward when Mbappé was substituted in the 85th minute, bowing as he left the field.
“We’re on a mission—and so am I with them,” Deschamps said.
France has now outscored its opponents 13-2 during the tournament, underlining its status as one of the favorites to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, Michael Olise recorded his fifth assist of the competition, the most by a player at a single World Cup since Thomas Häßler registered five assists for Germany in 1994.
