Uzodimma Launches Imo Vigilance Service to Boost Security

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has inaugurated the Imo State Vigilance Services Organisation (ISSO), a new security initiative aimed at tackling crime and enhancing public safety across the state. The outfit comprises 7,000 trained personnel tasked with eradicating criminality and creating a safe environment for residents.

Speaking at the ceremony at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square, Owerri, on Friday, Uzodimma described ISSO as part of his administration’s commitment to protecting the state’s developmental gains. “We are committed to creating a safe and secure environment for all residents of Imo State,” he said, noting that the outfit is backed by the Imo State Security Organisation Amendment Law No. 3 of 2025.

The governor stressed the importance of community involvement, urging traditional rulers to play a key role in exposing criminality. “You are the fathers of your communities. You know your children, and it is upon you to expose criminality in your domains,” he said, calling for close collaboration between local leaders and the vigilance organisation.

Uzodimma warned that the era of violence in the state was over. “We have worked too hard to build this new Imo. Any attempt to incite violence will not be tolerated. The era of constant fear is gone and now behind us.” He added that community cooperation is essential for maintaining safety: “When the right hand washes the left and the left washes the right, both hands become clean.”

Highlighting the broader impact, the governor said the launch signals to investors and visitors that Imo State prioritises safety, declaring, “Imo is open, Imo is safe.” He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for endorsing community policing and local security initiatives, emphasising that community ownership of security is key to national safety.

In his welcome address, Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Hon. Modestus Osakwe, described ISSO as a milestone in strengthening security. He expressed optimism that the organisation would enhance collaboration with conventional security agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure rapid response to threats, urging residents to actively participate in community safety.

Senator Osita Izunaso praised the initiative and pledged support for efforts to make Imo State a safe and prosperous place. The event was attended by Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, Senators Osita Izunaso and Patrick Ndubueze, members of the House of Representatives, and other government officials.
