Taraba Govt. Suspends Mining Operations Over Security Threats

The Taraba State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state following intelligence reports of emerging security threats that could undermine the peace currently enjoyed in the area.

Governor Agbu Kefas approved the shutdown as part of efforts to prevent potential security breaches and maintain stability across the state.

The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Gebon Kataps, who said the suspension would remain in effect until the identified threats are adequately addressed.

According to the statement, the government plans to establish a new task force to oversee security and safety within the mining sector once the prevailing concerns have been resolved.

Kataps directed local government authorities and traditional rulers throughout the state to ensure strict compliance with the order, warning that violators would face sanctions.

“The government will view any breach of this directive with serious consequences,” the statement noted.

He also called on residents to promptly report any suspected illegal mining activities to security agencies.

As part of efforts to strengthen enforcement and stakeholder engagement, the state government announced plans to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that mining operations would eventually resume under a more secure and properly regulated framework.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and movements within mining communities.

The decision places Taraba among states adopting stricter measures to tackle security concerns associated with mining activities, particularly in areas where illegal operations and criminal networks have become increasingly prevalent.
