One person has died following a collision between two cargo trains on a bridge in Munich early Saturday, an accident that caused several rail cars to derail and crash onto a street below, according to local authorities.
Police said the crash occurred in the early hours of the morning in the northern Munich district of Milbertshofen. Two freight train carriages left the tracks after the impact and fell from the bridge, prompting a major emergency response.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation, a police spokesperson said.
Emergency services received reports of the incident at approximately 1:40 a.m. local time. Around 60 firefighters and other first responders were dispatched to the scene to assist with rescue efforts and secure the area, according to Munich’s fire department.
Authorities have not yet released additional details about the victim or whether there were other injuries.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the collision as cleanup operations continue at the site.
The derailment caused significant disruption in the area, with emergency crews focusing on stabilizing the damaged rail cars and assessing the condition of the bridge and surrounding infrastructure.
