US to Refrain from Retaliatory Actions Against Iran, Supports Israel

The White House has conveyed to Israel that the United States will refrain from participating in any retaliatory actions against Iran, according to senior administration officials.

Iran launched over 300 drones and missiles overnight in response to an April 1 strike on its consulate in Syria. The majority of these weapons were intercepted by Israeli, US, and allied forces before reaching their intended targets.

Joe Biden reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise caution and deliberate strategy in determining the country’s response to this unprecedented action, marking Iran’s first direct attack on Israel. A senior administration official emphasized the importance of Israel’s thoughtful consideration and strategic planning in light of these developments during a briefing with reporters on Sunday.

The Biden administration believes that Israel emerged favorably from the recent exchange of hostilities, triggered by the killing of senior Iranian military commanders at an Iranian consular building in Syria.

Approximately 99% of the missiles, drones, and cruise missiles launched during Iran’s retaliatory operation were intercepted or shot down, demonstrating Israel’s military superiority over Iran, according to US officials.

US aircraft and naval vessels intercepted numerous Iranian projectiles during the attack. Over 80 drones and at least six ballistic missiles were downed by US aircraft, vessels, or air defense forces over Iraq. Additionally, seven drones and a ballistic missile were intercepted as they were being prepared for launch from Yemen, as reported by US Central Command (Centcom) on Sunday.

Following the attack, President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu engaged in a conversation during a period of heightened tension, particularly when approximately 100 ballistic missiles were simultaneously heading towards Israel.

During their call, President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed strategies to de-escalate tensions and carefully consider their next steps, with Biden emphasizing Israel’s successful handling of the situation.

The official refrained from specifying whether the White House advised against a substantial retaliation, indicating that this is a decision for Israel to carefully calculate.

Earlier in the day, national security spokesman John Kirby emphasized in several television interviews that the US has communicated its desire to prevent a broader conflict to Israel.

Similarly, the Biden administration has conveyed the same message to Iran through diplomatic channels.
