Reps Back Regional Commissions to Foster National Inclusion — Speaker Abbas

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has reaffirmed the commitment of the House to regional equity and inclusion through the establishment of development commissions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Speaking on Wednesday through Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during the official inauguration of the House Committees on the South-South, South-West, and North-Central Development Commissions, Abbas emphasized that the initiative is aimed at strengthening national unity and ensuring every region is an active stakeholder in Nigeria’s development journey.

“These commissions were not created for decoration. They are expected to function as active bridges between local realities and national policy,” the Speaker declared.

Describing the event as the beginning of “serious work,” Abbas charged the newly inaugurated committees to prioritize accountability, craft relevant legislation, and diligently oversee implementation by relevant agencies.

He stressed that equitable regional development is essential to national progress. “Every region must feel a genuine sense of belonging in the Nigerian project. That is why this House will continue to insist on fairness, regional inclusion, and sustained engagement with those at the grassroots,” he said.

Abbas urged the committees to focus their efforts on delivering meaningful outcomes, particularly for youth, women, and rural communities, who often experience the greatest levels of exclusion from government benefits.

“The real measure of your success will be in the visible improvements you help bring to the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he added.

The inauguration of the committees signals a renewed legislative drive to integrate all regions into the national development framework through tailored interventions and inclusive governance.
