Bonmati’s Extra-Time Stunner Sends Spain to First Women’s Euro Final

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati scored a dramatic extra-time winner to fire Spain past Germany 1-0 and into their first-ever UEFA Women’s European Championship final.

In a tense semi-final clash on Tuesday night, Bonmati broke the deadlock in the 113th minute with a brilliant turn and finish after being teed up by Athenea del Castillo, ending Germany’s hopes of a ninth Euro crown.

Spain will now face England in Basel on Sunday in a rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which La Roja won 1-0.

Despite Spain dominating possession, it was a tightly contested affair, with Germany creating chances of their own. Klara Bühl went close twice, narrowly missing the target in the 9th minute before forcing a crucial save from Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll in stoppage time.

Ann-Katrin Berger kept Germany in the game with several fine saves, denying Esther Gonzalez and Irene Paredes in the first half, while the post also came to Germany’s rescue.

As the game wore on, both sides pushed for a breakthrough, with Germany’s best opportunity coming late in regulation when Bühl’s deflected strike almost caught Coll off guard. The keeper recovered to make a diving save and then stopped Carlotta Wamser’s rebound.

Spain finally found the winner deep into extra time when del Castillo won possession and slipped in Bonmati, who turned inside the box and tucked the ball past Berger from a tight angle.

The win completes a stunning run for the reigning world champions, who had cruised through the group stage with a combined 14-3 scoreline and eliminated Switzerland 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Now just one win away from a historic quadruple World Cup, Nations League, Olympic gold, and European title Spain will meet Sarina Wiegman’s England in a highly anticipated final.
