Turkey Launches Airstrikes in Iraq and Syria After Deadly Attack Near Ankara Linked to PKK

Turkey’s government announced that its military launched airstrikes on Wednesday night targeting sites in Iraq and Syria connected to the Kurdish militant group PKK, following an attack near Ankara that left at least five people dead.

Footage from the earlier attack showed at least two individuals opening fire near the entrance of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), located roughly 40km (25 miles) outside the capital. While no group has claimed responsibility, the incident resulted in 22 injuries.

In a statement, the Turkish defense ministry reported that “a total of 32 targets belonging to the terrorists were successfully destroyed” in the retaliatory strikes. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack on TAI as “heinous” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that two attackers, identified as a woman and a man, had been “neutralized” and suggested that the attack was likely carried out by the PKK.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the UK, has been engaged in an armed struggle with the Turkish state since the 1980s, seeking greater rights for Turkey’s Kurdish minority.

According to Reuters, citing Turkish intelligence sources, the airstrikes targeted military facilities, ammunition depots, and energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces reported on Thursday that Turkey had launched a “new wave” of strikes, including attacks on “civilian gatherings,” resulting in 12 deaths.

The Turkish defense ministry reiterated that precautions were taken to avoid harm to civilians, friendly forces, historical and cultural sites, and the environment.
