President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, officially launched the construction of the 125km Benin-Asaba Highway, a project expected to be completed within 30 months.
Represented by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, Tinubu described the road as a legacy project, emphasizing that Edo State was rapidly advancing in infrastructure, akin to Lagos.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, highlighted the project’s innovative funding model, likening it to a “cashless programme.”
“We will not see the money, but the work will keep going. No begging or quarrels over funds—just results,” Umahi said, crediting the initiative to President Tinubu’s commitment to national road development.
Umahi further revealed that the project spans 250km (125km by 2 lanes) and will be equipped with solar-powered streetlights. He emphasized that the Federal Government is not directly funding the construction, as it is being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
“This is the way forward. The President is overseeing multiple road projects across the nation, ensuring that Nigerians benefit from quality infrastructure,” he added.
The Benin-Asaba Highway is one of 20 ongoing road projects between Edo and Delta states under Tinubu’s administration, reinforcing the government’s push for improved transportation networks nationwide.
